Sports equipment for marinas and yacht harbours: 316L stainless steel on the quayside
A marina is the harshest environment there is for a piece of fitness equipment installed ashore: permanent sea spray, chlorides, free public use and no supervision at all. Regional split of those harbours: Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur 163, Brittany 139, Atlantic coast 75, Normandy and Hauts-de-France 46, Occitanie 43, Corsica 22. Waiting lists are tightest around the Gulf of Morbihan, the bay of Saint-Malo, the Arcachon basin and the harbours of the French Riviera.
Why a marina installs a training area
Let us be direct: no regulation requires it, and the quality schemes of the sector do not treat it as a criterion. The Ports Propres certification, raised to the rank of ISO 18725 in 2024, covers waste, pollution, water and energy. The Blue Flag covers environmental quality and site management. Neither asks for sports equipment.
The logic is therefore commercial, and it rests on three distinct audiences every harbour manager knows well:
- Resident berth holders: a berth is let by the year, and the services-to-price ratio is compared from one harbour to the next. An outdoor training area is a visible, permanent service that costs nothing to operate.
- Visiting crews: a crew alongside wants to stretch its legs, usually without access to a gym. A free-access area on the hardstanding is a service that reads immediately.
- Harbour staff: berthing masters, technical teams, seasonal staff. A dedicated station near the operations building is a workplace quality measure as much as a service.
To this add the land-based public. Harbour promenades are places people walk through, often part of the town seafront. Free-access equipment there serves residents as much as boat owners, which opens the possibility of shared funding between the harbour operator and the municipality.
The material constraint on a quayside
Resistance to pitting corrosion is compared through the PREN index, calculated as PREN = Cr + 3.3 Mo + 16 N. Molybdenum is worth 3.3 points per percent, and it is precisely the element missing from 304.

ISO 9223 classifies atmospheres from C1, very low, to CX, extreme, the last category covering specific marine and industrial environments. A quayside exposed to spray sits in the upper categories of that scale. One point of vocabulary that counts in front of a design office: category C5-M no longer exists, the 2017 edition of ISO 12944-2 having replaced it with C5 and CX.
A second technical point, often forgotten: free-access equipment on ground open to the public falls under EN 16630, which governs design, safety zones and user information. Certificates of conformity and test reports are supplied with the offer.

Points to settle before ordering
- Anchoring: concrete foundation block or base plate on an existing slab. On backfilled hardstanding or a rock-armoured quay, the nature of the support governs the solution.
- Footprint and safety zones: the clearances required around each station, cross-checked against the movement of boat trailers and handling equipment.
- Surfacing: an impact-absorbing surface under pull-up and jump stations, covered by the range of outdoor sports flooring.
- Accessibility: a space open to the public raises the question of access for all, which is settled at design stage rather than after installation.
- Maintenance: periodic rinsing with fresh water removes chloride deposits, as for any stainless deck hardware. No repainting, no wear parts.
Frequently asked questions
Is a marina required to install sports equipment?
No. No regulation and no quality scheme in the sector requires it. The Ports Propres certification, which became ISO 18725 in 2024, and the Blue Flag award both concern environmental management of the site. Installing a training area is a service decision aimed at berth holders and at users of the harbour promenade.
Why 316L rather than galvanised steel on a quayside?
Because galvanising is consumed. In corrosivity category CX under ISO 9223, a zinc coating loses up to 25 microns a year. Stainless 316L is not consumed: its passive layer re-forms in the presence of oxygen. What maintenance does equipment exposed to spray all year need?
Periodic rinsing with fresh water and a visual check of the anchors. Stainless 316L needs no paint, no anti-corrosion treatment and no spare parts. Periodic inspection obligations follow from EN 16630 and from the operator’s own safety register.
