Personal training studio equipment: kit a small space that earns its rent

In a personal training studio, the constraint is never the catalogue, it is the floor area and the number of billable hours each square metre has to cover. A studio of 30 to 80 square metres cannot afford a machine that serves one exercise, and it cannot afford consumer grade equipment either, because six days a week of back to back clients will destroy it. Light In Fitness equips independent coaches, strength and conditioning specialists and private studio founders across Europe, with a selection built around footprint, versatility and a controlled opening budget.

The three constraints that shape every studio

Small floor area, maximum versatility. Every square metre has to work. Equipment must cover several movement patterns without multiplying units, which is where a modular cross training cage, an adjustable cable station or a multifunction rack justifies its cost against three single purpose machines.

A controlled opening budget. Most independent coaches open with limited capital. The task is to define a starter package that is genuinely professional, then extend it as the client base grows, rather than buying a half specified full gym on day one.

Professional durability, even at small scale. Consumer equipment is designed for a few hours a week in one household. A studio runs several clients a day, six days a week. Professional ranges accept a user weight up to 180 kg and carry a commercial warranty of three to five years; consumer equipment does neither, and if it fails during a session the liability is yours.

Sizing the studio: what fits in what area

Floor area Realistic configuration Session formats supported
30 to 40 m² Half rack, adjustable bench, dumbbell rack, functional accessories, sports flooring One to one coaching
40 to 60 m² Cage or half rack, adjustable cable station, bench, dumbbells 5 to 30 kg, kettlebells 8 to 24 kg, one cardio unit One to one and small groups of 2 to 4
60 to 80 m² The above plus a second cardio unit, a functional lane and dedicated storage Small groups, circuits, semi private classes

The 50 square metre studio is the reference case. It takes a cage or half rack, an adjustable cable station, an adjustable bench and a functional zone, and it handles one to one work and groups of two to four without feeling crowded. Below 30 square metres, group formats stop being viable and the business model has to be purely one to one.

The starter package for a 50 m² studio

This configuration covers the large majority of coaching needs without cluttering the room.

Item Quantity Why it is on the list
Cage or half rack with pull up bar and band pegs 1 Structures the room, covers squat, press, pull up and band work
Adjustable cable station, high and low pulley 1 Widest exercise range per square metre in the studio
Adjustable bench, flat, incline and decline 1 Multiplies the usable exercises on the rack and the cables
Dumbbell rack, 5 to 30 kg, or an adjustable set 1 Core of any coaching session, scalable to client level
Kettlebells, 8 to 24 kg Set Ballistic and carry work in almost no floor space
Medicine balls, stability ball, plyometric box Set Power, core and progression work
Battle ropes and resistance bands Set Conditioning and rehabilitation with no structural cost
Treadmill or rower 1, if space allows Warm up and conditioning intervals
Rubber tiles, plus a turf lane if there is room Full area Protects the slab, damps noise, defines the working zones

The small functional items are added afterwards without any structural consequence, which makes them the natural place to phase spending. The rack, the cable station and the floor are the decisions that are expensive to reverse.

Height, noise and the lease

Free height under the ceiling is the most common blocker in a converted retail unit or an office ground floor. Allow 2.50 m for cardio and light strength work, 2.80 m as soon as a guided cage or a rack enters the layout, and 3.00 m minimum for a cross training cage with a pull up bar. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not to the slab.

Noise is the second one, and it is what ends leases early. Rubber tiles under the free weight and cardio zones protect the concrete, absorb impact and cut the vibration passed to neighbouring units. Artificial turf is the better answer on a functional lane where sled pushes, sprints and lateral movement happen. If the studio is above another occupier, settle the floor build up before you sign, not after the first complaint.

Financing and phasing

Leasing is available through finance partners over 36 to 60 months on equipment packages from 10 000 euros excluding VAT, with instalments treated as an operating expense. For a coach opening a first studio, that spreads the initial outlay across the period the client base is being built. The alternative is phasing: buy the structural items first, since they define the room, and add cardio, a second cable station or extra loading once the diary justifies it.

How we work with independent coaches

The process is deliberately short. We take your floor plan, your specialism, whether that is strength, athletic preparation, general conditioning or combat sports, and your budget. We return a layout with a configuration that fits, a clear itemised quotation within 24 working hours, then deliver and install. Stock references ship in five to ten working days. After sales support and spare parts availability continue for the life of the equipment, which matters more in a studio than in a large club: a single machine out of service is a proportionally much bigger loss.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum floor area for a coaching studio?

A studio works from 30 square metres for one to one coaching. Fifty square metres is the reference figure: it accommodates a cage or half rack, a cable station, an adjustable bench and a functional zone, and supports groups of two to four.

What ceiling height should I plan for?

2.50 m is enough for cardio and light strength work. Allow 2.80 m as soon as a guided cage or rack is in the configuration, and 3.00 m minimum for a cross training cage with a pull up bar.

Professional or consumer equipment for a small studio?

Professional. It is built for several hours of daily use, accepts a user weight up to 180 kg and carries a three to five year commercial warranty. Consumer equipment does not hold up to six days a week with several clients a day, and it exposes you if a client is injured.

Can studio equipment be financed by leasing?

Yes, over 36 to 60 months on packages from 10 000 euros excluding VAT through our finance partners. Instalments are deductible as an operating expense, which smooths the opening investment.

Which flooring suits a coaching studio?

Rubber tiles for the free weight and cardio zones, to protect the slab, absorb impact and reduce vibration. Artificial turf on the functional lane where sled work, sprints and lateral movement take place.

Have your studio configured
