Mobile Ice Rink for Events: Usage and Logistics Guide
Introduction
The mobile ice rink is the undisputed star of temporary events, whether that means a Christmas market, a neighbourhood festival or a corporate celebration. These pop-up rinks bring a festive, energetic focal point to almost any space, and their popularity keeps growing. Light In Fitness, a specialist in sports installations, offers a turnkey solution for turning an event into something people remember. This guide covers everything a promoter, a municipality, a shopping centre or an event agency needs to know about installing, running and de-rigging a mobile rink.
Why choose a mobile ice rink
Mobile rinks offer unmatched flexibility for creating a seasonal attraction or a temporary activation. Their main strengths:
- Fast installation. Set up without heavy construction work, on a schedule agreed for your site.
- Flexibility. Suitable for a wide range of surfaces: car parks, public squares, sports pitches.
- Visual impact. A spectacular attraction that draws crowds and lifts attendance at your event.
- Environmental performance. Durable materials and low-energy cooling technology.
Popular applications
1. Christmas markets and end-of-year events
Christmas markets are one of the most common settings for a mobile rink. The rink creates the atmosphere and usually becomes the centrepiece of the whole event.
- Family attraction. Families come for an activity that works for children and adults alike.
- Longer dwell time. Visitors stay longer, using both the rink and the retail stands around it.
- Sponsorship potential. Advertising space around the rink can be sold to generate additional revenue.
2. Festivals and sports events
Mobile rinks are increasingly built into festivals and sports events to broaden the activity mix.
- Figure skating displays. Programmed performances attract a wide audience.
- Interactive activities. Beginner skating lessons raise participation and keep people on site.
- Brand promotion. An excellent setting for product launches and brand activations.
3. Corporate events and conferences
Companies use mobile rinks for internal events, offering a playful, interactive activity that builds team cohesion.
- Team building. An easy way to bring a team together in an informal setting.
- Themed evenings. A distinctive atmosphere for a company evening.
- Full customisation. The rink can be finished in company colours for a personal touch.
Logistics: preparation and installation
Installing a mobile rink needs careful planning. These are the key steps to a trouble-free deployment.
1. Choosing the right location
- Flat surface. The rink has to sit on a flat, solid surface to avoid deformation.
- Electrical supply. Provide a power connection for the cooling system, sized and positioned in advance.
- Safety. Make sure the area is secured and accessible to users of all ages.
2. Sizes and customisation
Mobile rinks are configured to the requirement. Several sizes are available to fit different spaces:
| Dimensions | Capacity | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|
| 10 m x 20 m | Up to 50 people | Smaller events |
| 15 m x 30 m | Up to 100 people | Christmas markets, festivals |
| 20 m x 40 m | Up to 200 people | Large public events |
| Bespoke | On request | Matched to your space |
3. Technical considerations
- Ambient temperature. Mobile rinks operate effectively up to 20 degrees Celsius. Above that, a canopy is recommended to reduce direct sun exposure.
- Water supply. Provide access to water for building the ice surface and for maintaining it.
- Lighting and sound. LED lighting and music considerably improve the experience for skaters.
4. Permissions and site paperwork
A temporary installation in a public space is subject to the permissions and safety requirements that apply locally: occupation of public land, temporary structure approval, electrical certification, crowd safety and public liability cover. These vary by country and by municipality, so confirm them with the relevant local authority at the planning stage rather than after the date is announced.
Getting the most from the attraction

Why a mobile rink for your next event
Investing in a mobile ice rink means choosing an attraction that draws crowds and creates memories. Turnkey solutions are available for events of every size, built from durable materials, whether the setting is a Christmas market or a corporate evening.
Mobile rinks sit alongside the other temporary and modular surfaces used for events and sport, including modular multi-sport courts and outdoor sports flooring, which are often specified for the same sites in the other seasons.
Frequently asked questions
Does a mobile ice rink work in mild weather?
Yes. Mobile rinks operate effectively up to 20 degrees Celsius. Above that, a canopy is recommended to limit direct sun on the ice surface.
What size rink suits a Christmas market?
15 m x 30 m is the usual recommendation, accommodating up to 100 skaters at once, which matches the flow of a typical market site.
What does the site need to provide?
A flat, solid surface, a suitable electrical supply for the cooling plant, access to water, and a secured perimeter. Everything else, including the boards, the ice and the plant itself, comes with the installation.
How long can a rink stay in place?
From a single weekend to a full winter season. The duration affects the plant specification, the staffing plan and the permissions required, so set it before the site is confirmed.
Planning your rink
Fix the dates, the footprint and the site services first, then confirm permissions and staffing, and only then finalise the programme around the rink. Detailed project quotations, covering the rink, the plant, the perimeter and the installation schedule, are available for municipalities, shopping centres, event agencies and companies.
