How to Create an Outdoor Fitness Trail

by Michaël Galy / Sunday, 20 October 2024 / Published in Santé, prévention et bien-être
Comment faire un parcours de santé

An outdoor fitness trail is an open-air sports facility that combines several pieces of equipment along a route, allowing varied and enjoyable physical activity. Open to everyone, it suits both regular athletes and occasional users, which is exactly why local authorities, campsites, resorts, housing associations, schools and clubs keep specifying them. Light In Fitness supplies outdoor sports equipment and supports you from the first layout sketch through to correct use of the finished trail. Here is how to plan one, and how to get the most out of it once it is in the ground.

1. Plan the route and the session before anything else

A trail works when the sequence works. Users need a warm-up before they reach the first demanding station: a few minutes of light jogging around the site, or a Nordic walking section along the paths, does the job and improves circulation while reducing injury risk. Build joint mobility movements into the beginning of the circuit so that muscles are prepared for the exercises to come. In design terms this means placing the low-intensity stations first and the pull and dip stations further along the loop, not the other way round.

2. Choosing the stations

Fitness trails are typically fitted with parallel bars, fixed bars, balance beams and abdominal benches. Durable equipment designed for permanent outdoor exposure allows a wide range of exercises to be performed safely, season after season.

  • Strength work. Fixed bars and parallel bars cover pull-ups and dips, which build muscle and endurance. The apparatus used on a public trail has to withstand weather and unsupervised use while remaining comfortable to grip.
  • Cardiovascular work. Running sections allow sprints and jumps, and circuit training that mixes running, jumping and floor exercises is one of the most effective ways to raise endurance on an open-air site.
  • Stretching and core. After the muscular work, stretching supports flexibility, and dedicated stations allow core exercises that strengthen the trunk and stabilise the body.

The full range of fitness trail stations covers each of these functions as individual modules, so a circuit can be sized to the site rather than bought as a fixed package.

3. Complementary activities on the same site

Diversify what the site offers by combining modular equipment with the activities already around it. A trail sitting near cycle paths pairs naturally with mountain biking, and open-air group gymnastics sessions run by coaches use the same modules for an entirely different purpose. Light In Fitness also supplies climbing equipment and aquatic structures, which allows an operator to extend a single site into a genuine outdoor activity offer rather than a row of identical stations.

4. Design for the people who will actually use it

Physical activity has to match the ability and the needs of the user. Older adults, people with physical limitations and people managing chronic conditions such as diabetes should follow a programme agreed with their doctor. On the specification side, that means an inclusive circuit: stations at usable heights, generous clear space around each module, and firm, even ground on the approach. Trails equipped by Light In Fitness are designed to be usable across the full range of fitness levels, not only by the users who are already fit.

5. Keeping people coming back

Regular practice is what prevents a sedentary lifestyle and maintains health, and an outdoor trail only delivers that if people return to it. Equipment that encourages social interaction helps: stations that two people can use side by side, groupings that suit a class, seating that makes the circuit a place to stay rather than pass through. Clubs and organisations working on an equipped trail can then run structured programmes on it, whether the goal is general fitness or performance.

6. Respect the setting, and specify materials that last

An outdoor trail lives in a landscape, and the equipment should be chosen accordingly. Light In Fitness offers installations manufactured from ecological materials such as recycled plastic, which combine durability with a reduced environmental impact. Benches and apparatus should be used with care, sites kept clean, and access maintained for everyone, which in practice means budgeting for maintenance from the outset rather than after the first winter.

7. The standard that applies to an outdoor trail

Permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment for adults falls under EN 16630, which covers construction, safety requirements and test methods for open-access outdoor training equipment. Ask for the manufacturer documentation showing conformity before you order, and keep it with the site file: on a publicly accessible installation it is the first thing an inspector or an insurer will ask to see. Where children are expected to use a separate play area on the same site, that area is covered by a different set of standards, EN 1176-1 for the equipment and EN 1177 for the impact-attenuating surfacing. The two families are not interchangeable, and adult trail equipment must never be presented as children play equipment.

Frequently asked questions

How much space does a fitness trail need?

It depends on the number of stations, their individual safety zones and the distance between them along the route. Work from the manufacturer drawings for each module and lay the circuit out on a site plan before ordering. We produce that layout study from your plan.

What surfacing is needed under the stations?

That depends on the equipment and its free height of fall. The requirement comes from the standard applying to the equipment installed, so it is settled at specification stage rather than on site.

Can a trail be extended later?

Yes, provided the layout leaves room for it. Modular ranges are designed so that stations can be added in phases, which is often how a multi-year budget is best used.
