  • Equipping a gym franchise or multi-site operation

Equipping a gym franchise or multi-site operation

In a chain, the equipment decision is not about one gym but about a repeatable standard floor plan: same references, same layout, same maintenance contract, rolled out site after site. What costs money is not the unit price of a machine, it is inconsistency: three treadmill brands across five clubs means three parts inventories, three service contacts and no comparison possible between sites.

Light In Fitness has equipped commercial gyms, boxes and studios since 2013 and supplies every family on a gym floor — cardio, selectorised, free weights, functional, flooring — through a single point of contact. This page covers the specific case of a network: a franchisor defining a standard, a franchisee opening a club, an operator running several sites.

What changes between a single club and a network

Issue Single club Multi-site network
Equipment selection Decided locally, case by case Standard floor plan approved once, repeated at every opening
Spare parts Ordered when a fault occurs Pooled stock on common wear parts
Maintenance One-off intervention Identical servicing plan, same tasks on every site
Staff training On whatever is installed One reference set, staff can move between sites
Brand consistency Free Colours, layout and signage set by the concept
Replacement cycle Machine by machine In waves, on a shared depreciation schedule

The practical consequence is simple: the standard floor plan is defined before the first opening, not after the third. A network that lets each franchisee choose its own equipment loses the pooling that justified the network.

The families to fix in the standard

Zone What must be standardised Range
Cardio Brand and console generation, for parts and member experience consistency Cardio equipment
Selectorised A complete series from one range, for consistent adjustment and design Selectorised machines
Free weights Plate diameter and coating, dumbbell increments, rack height Racks and cages
Functional training Rig configuration and number of stations per floor area Functional training stations
Flooring Thickness and finish by zone, a condition of the warranty on what stands on it Rubber gym flooring tiles
Accessories Families and quantities per floor area, storage included Fitness accessories

The areas where standardisation adds least are those dictated by the building: ceiling height, floor loading, column positions. They are handled site by site at layout stage. The full process is described on the turnkey projects page.

The 24/7 club with no permanent staff

A club open continuously, unsupervised for part of the day, shifts three requirements. Equipment must first tolerate uncorrected use: closed linkage, simple adjustment, no assembly left to the member. It must then limit transmitted noise, since night-time use often concerns premises adjoining dwellings — the deciding factor there is the floor, covered on the sports flooring page and completed by an acoustic underlay. It must finally be quick to repair, since a machine that fails with nobody on site stays out of service until the next visit.

Budget, roll-out waves and replacement

A network thinks in cost per site and in calendar, not in average basket. Real ranges by equipment family are published on the professional sports equipment prices page ; they allow a standard opening budget to be built before going into reference-level detail.

Two points deserve to be settled at the first site: the depreciation period retained per family, which sets the replacement rhythm, and what happens to equipment removed at replacement. Warranty terms, exclusions and the claim process are on the equipment warranties page.

One service contact for every site

This is the most tangible benefit of a single supplier across a network: one reporting process, one parts reference set, one contact whichever site is affected. Scope, lead times and parts availability are detailed on the after sales and spare parts page.

Frequently asked questions

Should every franchisee be given the same references ?

On cardio and selectorised machines, yes: that is what makes parts interchangeable, maintenance repeatable and the member experience identical between sites. On accessories and furniture, local adaptation has no operational consequence.

Can several sites be equipped on the same schedule ?

Yes, provided manufacturing lead times for the families concerned are anticipated and deliveries are aligned with the construction progress of each site. Layout drawings are produced site by site, from the standard floor plan approved beforehand.

Is flooring really part of the standard ?

Yes, and it is the most commonly underestimated item. Thickness and material determine how the equipment above it holds up, how the space behaves acoustically and, in drop zones, whether the warranty on plates and platforms still applies.

How should replacement be managed across several clubs ?

In waves, using a depreciation period per family rather than per machine. Cardio, which concentrates electronic and mechanical wear, is replaced earlier than selectorised machines, whose structure remains serviceable well beyond.

Does Light In Fitness supply every family on a gym floor ?

Yes. Cardio, selectorised machines, plate loaded machines, functional training, free weights, accessories, flooring and furniture come from the same contact, which removes the need to coordinate several suppliers at each opening.
