Financing and Leasing Fitness Equipment: A Guide for Professionals

by Michaël Galy / Saturday, 31 January 2026 / Published in Guides Acheteurs

Opening or refitting a gym is a substantial investment. Between strength machines, cardio equipment, sports flooring and accessories, the total can quickly run into tens of thousands of euros. Flexible financing arrangements exist precisely so that an operator can protect working capital while still installing professional-grade equipment, and leasing is the arrangement most often used to do it.

Leasing: the option most operators choose

Leasing, in the sense of a rental agreement with a purchase option at the end, is the financing structure best suited to fitness equipment. The reasons are consistent across markets.

What leasing gives a fitness business:

  • Cash flow protection: no large upfront outlay to get the floor open
  • Operating expense treatment: in most tax systems, lease payments are treated as deductible operating expenses rather than as a capital purchase, though how that works depends on your national rules and is worth confirming with your accountant
  • Easier renewal: equipment can be changed at the end of the agreement without having to handle the resale yourself
  • Predictable budgeting: fixed monthly payments across the term
  • Flexibility: the option to buy the equipment at its residual value when the agreement ends

Terms, minimum amounts, agreement lengths and approval times are set by the leasing company in your own country, so we do not quote figures here that would apply somewhere else. Tell us where you are based and we will point you to the arrangements actually available to you.

What documents are usually needed

Leasing companies generally ask for proof that the business exists and can meet the payments: the company registration document used in your country, identification for the signatory, bank details, and recent financial statements once the order passes a certain size. The exact list, and the threshold above which accounts are required, is set by the lessor in your jurisdiction.

Which equipment can be financed?

Practically all professional fitness equipment is eligible for leasing:

  • Strength training machines: leg presses, pulldowns, chest presses, racks and multi-station gyms
  • Cardio equipment: treadmills, cross trainers, rowing machines and exercise bikes
  • Sports flooring: rubber tiles, rolls and tatami mats
  • Professional accessories: dumbbells, Olympic barbells, kettlebells and benches
  • Furniture: changing room fittings, lockers and mirrors

Financing can cover an entire equipment project under a single agreement, which keeps the administration simple: one file, one set of payments, one renewal date.

Frequently asked questions

My company is new. Can it still lease?

Yes. Newly formed companies can access leasing. The conditions may differ, with additional guarantees or an initial contribution, but arrangements exist for young businesses.

What happens at the end of the agreement?

There are generally three options: buy the equipment at its residual value, renew the equipment under a new agreement, or return it.

Can a mixed project be financed?

Yes. Machines, flooring and accessories can be grouped into a single file with a single monthly payment, rather than run as separate agreements.

Is leasing better than buying outright?

It depends on your cash position and how often you intend to refresh the floor. Buying suits an operator with capital available and equipment they expect to keep for a long time; leasing suits one who would rather keep cash working in the business and renew equipment on a regular cycle.

Planning the investment

Financing works best when the equipment list is settled first. Start from the surface area, the profile of your members and the zones you need to fill, then price the project as a whole. That way the financing conversation is about one clear figure rather than a moving target, and the monthly payment can be matched against the membership revenue the floor is expected to generate.
