How to Choose a Magnetic Rowing Machine for a Gym

by Michaël Galy / Thursday, 03 July 2025 / Published in Cardio, Guides Acheteurs, Rameurs
Comment choisir un rameur magnétique pour la salle de sport. ?

In short: choosing a magnetic rowing machine for a gym means weighing seven criteria: resistance system, ergonomics, console, resistance range, build quality, footprint and connectivity. A rower is one of the few machines that trains the whole body and delivers a serious cardiovascular workout at the same time, which is why it earns its floor space.

1. The resistance system

Magnetic rowers generate resistance with a magnetic braking system acting on a flywheel. The brake never touches the wheel, which is why the machine runs quietly and why the braking components do not wear the way friction systems do.

Two points matter for a commercial floor. A magnetic brake lets resistance be adjusted easily and repeatably, which suits members progressing through a plan. And some models adjust automatically according to stroke rate, which removes a setting decision from a first-time user and is the single most useful feature for an unsupervised room.

Air resistance is the other family found in gyms, and it behaves differently: resistance rises with effort rather than being set by the user. Our air cardio range covers that requirement where interval and competition-style training is programmed.

2. Ergonomics and comfort

Comfort decides how long a member stays on the machine, which on a rower is the whole point. Check three things: a comfortable seat, adjustable footplates with secure straps, and handles that can be gripped without forcing the wrist. Together they reduce injury risk and make the machine usable by a wide range of body types.

A smooth rail and transport wheels are practical extras that matter more in a commercial room than in a specification sheet, because they decide how easily the machine can be moved for cleaning and for class layouts.

3. Console and display

An on-board computer with a clear display is not a luxury on a shared floor. It should show heart rate, distance covered, calories burned and training time at a glance. Real-time feedback is what pushes a member towards a target, whether that target is weight management or endurance, and it is also what makes a rower feel worth queuing for.

4. Resistance range

Choose a machine with a wide range of resistance levels. The range is what lets one machine serve a deconditioned beginner and a trained member on the same afternoon, and it is what allows the emphasis to shift between the upper body, worked through the back, shoulders and arms during the pull, and the lower body, worked through the legs during the drive. A wide range also lets a member load the muscles harder while keeping heart rate in the intended zone.

5. Materials and maintenance

Equipment on a commercial floor has to be robust enough for continuous use. Inspect the quality of the rail, the frame and the braking system before buying, because those three parts define the service life of the machine.

Models with a large flywheel generally deliver a smoother and quieter stroke, which is appreciated in a shared environment and matters even more where the gym sits below guest rooms or offices. All indoor equipment for a commercial facility must be built and certified to EN ISO 20957-1 class S, the studio class intended for supervised professional use.

6. Footprint and storage

Where floor area is limited, a folding rower is worth considering. Compact and folding models are increasingly common because they let a facility offer rowing without permanently occupying the room. Check that the model stores easily and, ideally, that it has transport wheels.

7. Advanced features

Some machines add built-in training programmes covering different objectives, from muscular conditioning to endurance work and preparation for rowing itself. Others connect to training applications, so members can track sessions across visits. Neither is essential, but on a floor competing for members both are visible differences.

Where the rower fits in the cardio line

A rower complements rather than replaces the rest of the cardio equipment on the floor, because it loads the posterior chain in a way that treadmills and bikes do not. Two or three units in a mixed cardio zone is a common ratio; our professional rowing machines cover both magnetic and air resistance.

Frequently asked questions

Magnetic or air resistance for a gym?

Magnetic for quiet operation and precisely set resistance levels, air for a resistance that rises with the effort applied. Facilities running interval and competition-style programming often install both.

What should I check before ordering?

The rail, the frame and the braking system, plus the adjustment range of the footplates. Those determine both service life and how many different members can use the machine comfortably.

Is a folding rower suitable for commercial use?

Yes, provided it is certified for professional use and the folding mechanism is built for daily handling. It is the usual answer where a room has to be cleared for classes.

Specifying your cardio zone

Tell us the size of the room, the peak number of users and the programmes you run, and we will propose a cardio mix with a costed equipment list. Request a quote and we will size the rower count to your actual attendance.
