Yacht and superyacht gym equipment: 316L stainless steel for open decks and interior spaces

On a yacht, the gym runs into three limits the ordinary fitness catalogue ignores: floor area, weight carried, and how the equipment stands up to salt spray. A chrome-plated strength machine installed on a sun deck pits within a season. Stainless steel 316L, with a PREN index of 23.1 to 28.5 against 17.5 to 20.8 for 304, is the grade that withstands permanent salt exposure. Light In Fitness manufactures 98 references in 316L, from the adjustable bench at 1,199 euros excluding VAT to the largest multi-station cage at 24,999 euros, with structures under lifetime guarantee. The full comparison, environment by environment, is set out on the page which stainless steel grade to choose.

A fleet of 6,174 units and 588 vessels under construction

The Monaco Yacht Show market report counts 6,174 superyachts over 30 metres in operation, of which 5,259 motor yachts and 915 sailing yachts, plus 588 units under construction. The fleet is dominated by smaller vessels: 63 % of them measure between 30 and 40 metres, 21 % between 40 and 50 metres, and 3 % exceed 80 metres. 142 yards are currently building superyachts, Turkey accounting for 55 of them and Italy 53.

That distribution has a direct consequence for the design of a training space on board: the majority of projects concern vessels of 30 to 40 metres, where the area given over to sport rarely exceeds a few square metres, often on an open deck rather than in an enclosed room.

The constraints specific to yachting

Constraint Technical translation Response
Available area 2 to 15 sq m on a 30-40 m vessel, rarely a dedicated room Multi-function stations, wall rigs, free weights
Weight carried Effect on the loading plan and on stability Declared mass per reference, trade-off between guided load and free weights
Corrosion Permanent salt spray, ISO 9223 category C5 to CX Stainless 316L, 2.0 to 2.5 % molybdenum under EN 10088
Acoustics Room adjoining owner or guest cabins Non-motorised equipment, impact-absorbing floor, rigid anchoring
Finish Consistency with the interior fit-out of the vessel Brushed or polished stainless, no paint that flakes
Intervention window Short, dated refit lay-up Delivery to the yard, assembly on site

Open deck versus enclosed room

Two locations coexist, with opposite material logics.

On an open deck, exposure is direct and permanent. Anything that is not 316L degrades: chrome plating blisters, painted steel fails from the edges, galvanising is consumed. In corrosivity category CX under ISO 9223, a zinc coating loses up to 25 microns a year. The suitable references are open structures that do not hold water: the stainless 7-grip pull-up bar at 1,499 euros excluding VAT, the stainless dip bars at 1,499 euros, the wall-mounted stainless luxury functional rig at 5,999 euros. The complete range is on the page 316L stainless steel outdoor fitness equipment.

In an enclosed room, the atmosphere stays saline and humid, and ventilation is rarely enough to exclude it. 316L keeps its value, with the added requirement of fire behaviour: annex 2 of the 2010 FTP Code lists common metals and alloys among the products that may be installed without test or approval, which is not the case for composite frames or upholstered parts.

Typical configurations by vessel size

Yacht size Typical sports area Configuration Indicative budget excl. VAT
24 to 30 m 2 to 4 sq m, open deck Pull-up bar, dip bars, stainless dumbbells 3,000 to 6,000 euros
30 to 40 m 4 to 8 sq m Wall rig, multi-adjustable bench, dumbbell set, bumper plates 8,000 to 15,000 euros
40 to 60 m 10 to 20 sq m, dedicated room possible 4-station functional rig, bench, leg press, non-motorised treadmill 20,000 to 40,000 euros
Over 60 m 20 sq m and above, full gym Cable crossover, guided load, full cage, free weight platform 40,000 euros and above

The budgets shown cover the equipment alone, on the basis of published list prices excluding VAT for the stainless catalogue. They include neither the flooring, nor the fixings, nor logistics to the yard.

Cardio on board: why non-motorised wins

A motorised cardio machine on board carries three weaknesses at once: an electrical connection to negotiate with the ship’s system, electronics exposed to saline humidity, and a fault that puts the machine out of service until a technician next comes aboard – often thousands of miles from the nearest service point.

The IGREEN non-motorised outdoor treadmill, at 5,999 euros excluding VAT, removes all three. The belt is driven by the stride: there is no motor, no power electronics board and no supply cable. The same reasoning applies to free weights and to plate-loaded machines, which have no component capable of failing at sea. See the range of outdoor treadmills.

Refit: working inside the yard window

The Mediterranean concentrates refit capacity. MB92 La Ciotat operates a 4,300-tonne shiplift able to take six yachts up to 115 metres, a 2,000-tonne syncrolift and more than 1,600 metres of berthing; its large dock measures 200 metres by 60. Monaco Marine brings together nine sites between Marseille, La Ciotat, La Seyne-Toulon, the gulf of Saint-Tropez, Golfe-Juan, Antibes, Nice, Villeneuve-Loubet and Monaco.

A sports equipment package inserted into a refit follows the yard’s schedule, not the other way round. The items to fix early:

  • Masses and floor footprints for each reference, for the loading plan and the stability calculation.
  • Method of fixing: drilling the deck, base plate on existing structure, or an added technical floor.
  • Passage envelope: package dimensions checked against hatches and passageways, and the decision to assemble on board or to load assembled.
  • Delivery window alongside or at the yard, aligned with the lay-up.
  • Technical documents expected by the design office: material grade, dimensions, permissible loads.

Frequently asked questions

Why 316L rather than 304 on a yacht?

316L contains 2.0 to 2.5 % molybdenum under EN 10088, an element absent from 304. In the formula PREN = Cr + 3.3 Mo + 16 N, every percent of molybdenum adds 3.3 points to the pitting resistance index. 316L sits between 23.1 and 28.5, 304 between 17.5 and 20.8. In a permanent chloride atmosphere, that gap is visible to the naked eye in less than a season.

Does fitness equipment need certification to be installed on a yacht?

A structure entirely in metal falls under common metals and alloys, which annex 2 of the 2010 FTP Code allows to be installed without fire test or approval. Upholstered parts fall under part 8 of the same code, surface finishes under SOLAS regulation II-2/6. The applicable regime depends on the vessel’s status, commercial or private, and on its classification society: settle the point with the yard before ordering.

How much weight does a 10 sq m training space represent on board?

The weight depends entirely on the references chosen: a pull-up bar and an adjustable bench weigh a few tens of kilos, a plate-loaded leg press with its weight set several hundred. Unit masses are given with the quotation, reference by reference, precisely so that the trade-off against the vessel’s loading plan can be made.

Can the equipment stay in place year-round on an open deck?

Yes, that is what the range is for. The 316L stainless structures carry a lifetime guarantee and are designed for permanent exposure to a saline atmosphere. Periodic rinsing with fresh water remains advisable to remove surface chloride deposits, as for any stainless deck hardware.

Do you build bespoke configurations?

Yes. A dimension imposed by a passageway, an installation on a non-standard deck, a height limited by a deck beam: custom manufacturing covers the design and production of the structures.

Discussing your project
