Stainless steel makes an outdoor strength range possible with no corrosion and no maintenance programme, for a service life beyond thirty years. Unlike painted or galvanised steel, it needs no repainting and no scheduled replacement. Light In Fitness is one of the few suppliers offering a complete outdoor strength range in this material.
Why stainless steel outdoors
Corrosion resistance
Grades 304 and 316 stand up to rain, snow, sea air and chlorine without the rust that eventually reaches every coated frame. In aggressive atmospheres this is not a refinement, it is the difference between an installation that ages and one that has to be replaced.
Virtually no upkeep
No repainting, no anti-corrosion treatment, no replacement of rusted components. Occasional cleaning is the whole maintenance programme.
A 30 to 50 year service life
Stainless outdoor equipment lasts two to three times longer than galvanised steel. Some stainless installations are still in perfect condition after forty years.
Appearance that holds
The polished or brushed finish stays as delivered. No fading, no flaking, no rust streaks down a concrete plinth.
Hygiene
A non-porous surface, easy to clean and disinfect – which matters wherever there are sanitary requirements, such as pools, healthcare sites and schools.
Grade 304 or grade 316?
| Characteristic | Grade 304 | Grade 316 (marine) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard corrosion resistance | Excellent | Excellent |
| Resistance to chlorides and salt | Good | Excellent |
| Recommended environment | Urban parks, gardens | Seafront, swimming pools |
| Price | Standard stainless | 15 to 25 per cent higher |
Our recommendation: grade 304 for the majority of projects, grade 316 where there is direct exposure to sea salt or chlorine.
Comparing outdoor materials
| Criterion | Painted steel | Galvanised steel | Stainless 304/316 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service life | 8 to 15 years | 15 to 25 years | 30 to 50 years |
| Annual maintenance | High, with touch-ups | Moderate | Close to none |
| Maintenance cost over 20 years | 30 to 50 per cent of purchase price | 15 to 25 per cent of purchase price | Under 5 per cent of purchase price |
| Marine environment | Not recommended | Limited | Suitable |
| Purchase price | Lowest | Middle | Highest |
| Total cost over 30 years | Highest | Middle | Middle |
The real economic case
Stainless equipment costs 50 to 80 per cent more to buy. Over 25 to 30 years, however:
- Painted steel: purchase price plus two or three replacements, so three times the initial price.
- Galvanised steel: purchase price plus one replacement plus maintenance, so twice the initial price.
- Stainless steel: purchase price, no replacement, no maintenance programme, so one times the initial price.
Over a long holding period stainless is the cheaper option, which is why it appeals particularly to public authorities buying assets they intend to keep.

Typical applications
Coastal resorts and seafront sites
Grade 316 handles salt-laden air, which makes it the specification for fitness trails on seafront promenades, beach and coastal campsite equipment, and sailing clubs and water sports bases.
Swimming pools and aquatic centres
Stainless resists chlorine and constant humidity: fitness areas around pools, municipal aquatic centres, hotels with an outdoor pool.
Public authorities buying for the long term
High-traffic urban parks, schools and university campuses, and locations with a vandalism problem – stainless is harder to damage and far harder to make look damaged.
Premium residential and hospitality
Senior living schemes, high-specification residential developments, hotels and resorts, where the communal areas are part of the offer.
Mountain environments
Resistance to freeze-thaw cycles and to de-icing salt: ski resorts, mountain refuges and altitude activity centres.
Budget and whole-life cost
Indicative prices for the stainless range
| Equipment | Indicative price |
|---|---|
| Single station (pull-up bar, dips) | 2,500 to 5,000 EUR excluding VAT |
| Stainless strength machine (leg press, chest press) | 5,000 to 10,000 EUR excluding VAT |
| Stainless multi-station | 8,000 to 15,000 EUR excluding VAT |
| Complete stainless fitness park, 6 to 10 stations | 40,000 to 80,000 EUR excluding VAT |
Worked example: a six-station fitness park
| Galvanised steel | Stainless 304 | |
|---|---|---|
| Initial investment | 25,000 EUR | 45,000 EUR |
| Maintenance per year | 1,500 EUR | 200 EUR |
| Replacement in year 18 | 25,000 EUR | None |
| Total cost over 30 years | 95,000 EUR | 51,000 EUR |
The saving over thirty years is 44,000 EUR. The figures are indicative and exclude VAT, but the shape of the calculation holds wherever the holding period is long: the purchase price decides the first budget, the maintenance and replacement lines decide every budget after it.
Stainless equipment is eligible for the same public sports facility funding as standard equipment. The schemes, the rates and the application windows differ by country and by region, so check what applies where your project is before building the funding into a business case.
Frequently asked questions
Can stainless steel rust?
Grade 304 can show light surface marking, usually contact rust picked up from other metals, in very aggressive environments. It cleans off and it is not structural. Grade 316 is markedly more resistant to chlorides, which is why it is specified on the coast and around pools.
How is stainless equipment maintained?
Washing with soapy water two to four times a year is enough. For stubborn marks, white vinegar or a proprietary stainless steel cleaner.
Is the equipment certified?
Yes. The range complies with EN 16630, the standard for permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment.
Can the equipment be customised?
Yes. Engraved plates for a local authority or a sponsor logo, and bespoke configurations, are available.
What warranty applies?
Warranty terms for the stainless range are confirmed with the quotation. The real service life is 30 to 50 years.
Is installation included?
Delivery and installation are quoted with the project, and foundations and anchoring can be included in the quotation.
Moving to stainless
If the site is coastal, chlorinated, salt-exposed or simply intended to last, stainless is the specification that removes the maintenance line from the budget rather than deferring it. Send us the location, the exposure and the number of stations you need and we will put together a project quotation. Request a quote to begin.
