School sports equipment: primary, secondary and higher education
Un équipement sportif scolaire ne relève pas d'une norme unique : la cour d'école relève de la série EN 1176, la salle de musculation d'un lycée de l'EN ISO 20957, et un espace fitness extérieur en accès libre de l'EN 16630. Cette dernière vise les utilisateurs de plus de 1 400 millimètres. Le choix du matériel se fait donc par espace, école, collège ou lycée, et non par établissement entier.
School sports equipment does not sit under a single standard: the primary school playground falls under the EN 1176 series, a secondary school weights room falls under EN ISO 20957-1, and a free access outdoor fitness area falls under EN 16630, which addresses users taller than 1,400 mm. Equipment selection therefore starts from the age of the pupils and the location of the installation, before any budget discussion. Getting that boundary wrong is the single most common cause of a non compliant school installation.

Who decides and who pays
In most European countries the body that owns the buildings runs the purchase and therefore the procurement procedure, and it is not the school itself. The French split below is a useful illustration; check the equivalent tier in your own country, because it determines which procurement thresholds apply and who signs the contract.

In all four cases the purchase is a public contract. Thresholds, division into lots and invoicing are covered on buying sports equipment through public tender, and the documents to demand from a supplier on supplier qualification documents.
Where the standards divide
This is the point that determines whether a school project is compliant, and the point on which tender documents are most often vague.
- EN 1176 and EN 1177 cover play equipment intended for children and the surfacing that protects them. This is the regime for nursery and primary school playgrounds.
- EN 16630 covers permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment with free public access, for users taller than 1,400 mm. A station certified to this standard is therefore not intended for a nursery playground, whatever its appearance.
- EN 15312 covers free access multi-sport equipment, typically the multi-use games area of a secondary school.
- EN ISO 20957-1 covers stationary indoor training equipment; older documents may still cite the superseded EN 957 designation. Use class S designates studio use, meaning collective and supervised, and it is the class to require for a school or university gym.
Where an installation genuinely serves two age groups, the answer is not a compromise machine but two zones, each certified to its own standard, each with its own surfacing specification and its own signage. Use classes and test regimes are set out on our equipment standards and compliance page.
A school or university weights room
Three constraints separate an education gym from a commercial one.
- Turnover is heavy and short. A whole class occupies the room for a session of under an hour, so adjustments must be quick, legible and tool free, and seat and pad positions should be numbered so a teacher can call out settings.
- User ability is highly variable. Selectorised machines limit range of movement and secure the movement path better than free weights, which reduces the need for close supervision by staff who are not strength coaches.
- Expected service life exceeds the depreciation period. School equipment often stays in place for fifteen to twenty years, so structural warranty and spare part availability matter more than the purchase price.

The outdoor area and the playground
Equipment installed outdoors and reachable outside school hours becomes a free access public area, with the operating duties that go with it: an upkeep plan, a maintenance plan, a dated inspection register for each site and display of the operator identity at every entrance. Many schools underestimate this: a fence that is locked at 18:00 changes the risk profile, an open school yard used as a neighbourhood space does not.
For the surfacing, the free height of fall of the equipment drives the performance required of the surface. A surface whose measured critical fall height is lower than the free height of fall of the equipment it protects is not acceptable. Frequently asked questions
Who buys sports equipment for a secondary school?
The public body that owns the buildings, which in France is the department for lower secondary schools, the region for upper secondary schools and the municipality for primary schools. The school itself usually specifies the need but does not sign the contract. In every case the purchase follows public procurement rules.
Can an outdoor fitness station be installed in a nursery playground?
No. EN 16630 addresses users taller than 1,400 mm, meaning adolescents and adults. A nursery playground falls under the EN 1176 series, with surfacing tested to EN 1177. Installing an adult station in an infant playground puts the operator outside the scope of both standards.
Which use class should we require for a school gym?
Use class S under EN ISO 20957, meaning studio use, collective and supervised. Equipment in a class intended for domestic use is not designed for the load of a whole class rotating through it several times a day, and its warranty will normally exclude institutional use.
Does a school have to keep an inspection register?
Yes as soon as it operates a public play area or free access equipment: upkeep plan, maintenance plan, a dated register of inspections for each site, and display of the operator identity at every entrance. The register is what evidences your duty of care if an accident occurs.
Should we prefer selectorised machines to free weights in a school?
Selectorised machines limit range of movement and secure the movement path, which suits a mixed ability group and supervision that is not one to one. Free weights remain relevant for sports streams and athlete preparation, with dedicated coaching, appropriate flooring and a lifting platform.
