Description
The Work-fit Lumbars bench is a wooden fitness trail station for abdominal and lower back work outdoors. It gives a public trail the trunk conditioning element that walking and running routes otherwise lack, in a form that needs no adjustment, no weight stack and no supervision. The station is built entirely from laminated Scandinavian pine treated in autoclave to class IV and finished with two coats of Lasur, with metal parts in stainless steel AISI 304 and electro galvanised fasteners of upgraded quality.
The bench serves two exercise families. Face up, the user works the abdominal chain with the feet secured; face down, the same frame supports lower back extensions. Alternating the two is the standard way to build trunk endurance without loading the spine in flexion for a whole session, which is why this station is usually placed midway along a trail rather than at the start.
Timber was chosen for the same reason it is used across the Work-fit range. There is no coating to chip, no bearing to seize and nothing detachable that invites vandalism, so maintenance is limited to inspection and occasional refinishing. Small natural checks appear in laminated pine over time and do not affect its strength or its weather resistance.

Where the station fits in a trail
A Work-fit route is built by combining elements rather than buying one item. Local authorities typically alternate a pull or climbing station, a balance element and a trunk station like this bench along an existing footpath, spacing them so that the walk between stations provides the aerobic interval. Campsites and holiday villages use shorter loops of three or four stations near the accommodation.
Two requirements drive the groundworks. EN 1176-1:2017 sets the safety area to be kept clear around the station, and the surfacing inside that area is chosen from the free height of fall. Because a bench is a low station, the surfacing requirement is usually lighter than for climbing modules, which is worth knowing when the budget is split between equipment and civil works. The exact dimensions and safety area for this bench are supplied with the layout study.
Frequently asked questions
Does the bench need any adjustment before use?
No. It is a fixed geometry station, which is deliberate for unsupervised public use.
What dimensions should I allow?
The station footprint and the EN 1176-1 safety area are issued with the layout study for your site, together with the foundation drawing.
How is the timber maintained?
Annual inspection and periodic reapplication of the Lasur finish. Individual timber sections and stainless fittings remain available as spares for 10 years.
