Description
ECHO stacks three horizontal nets 0.7 m apart to form two isosceles right triangles joined at their apex, tensioned across four posts in a 3.0 x 3.0 m configuration. The module is climbed vertically, level by level, rather than traversed.
Three levels, deliberate spacing
The 0.7 m gap between nets is the design decision that matters. It is close enough that a child can push up from one level to the next without a run of continuous holds, and far enough that each level feels like a separate place to be. Children treat the intermediate net as a floor: they sit on it, look down through it and use it as a base before continuing. That is a different experience from a single tall net, where the only reward is the top.
- Three superimposed horizontal nets spaced 0.7 m apart
- Two isosceles right triangles joined at the apex
- Steel fixing clamps protected with chlorinated rubber paint
- Posts with galvanised and powder coated caps

Supervision on a multi-level module
Because children stop at each level, supervisors can see where everyone is, which is easier than monitoring a single continuous climb. The free height of fall remains 2.85 m for the module as a whole, so the impact attenuating surface to EN 1176-1 is sized against that figure across the full 8.3 x 8.3 m area.
Maintenance
Horizontal nets take standing loads rather than climbing loads, so the inspection focus is on tension and on the clamps carrying each level. Both are recorded under the routine, operational and annual regime required by EN 1176.
Frequently asked questions
Can children sit on the middle level?
Yes, and they do. The horizontal nets are designed to be occupied, which is what distinguishes ECHO from a purely vertical climbing net.
Is a fall arrested by the lower nets?
The nets are not fall arrest devices. The certified free height of fall of 2.85 m and the required surfacing apply to the module as a whole.
How much surfacing does it need?
Roughly 69 square metres, from the 8.3 x 8.3 m safety area. On constrained sites, a two-post module gives a smaller surfaced footprint.
