Cruise ship fitness equipment: open decks and training spaces in 316L stainless steel

On a cruise ship, a machine installed on an open deck takes both the salt spray and the continuous use of several thousand passengers. That is the hardest combination on the market: permanent corrosion and intensive use without supervision. Stainless steel 316L answers the first, and a design built on free weights and bodyweight answers the second – no electronics, no motors, no consumables. Light In Fitness manufactures 98 references in 316L, structures under lifetime guarantee, from the pull-up bar at 1,499 euros excluding VAT to the C12 street workout cage at 24,999 euros.

A growing market and an order book worth 71 billion dollars

According to the CLIA State of the Cruise Industry 2026 report, the association’s members operate 310 ocean-going cruise ships and carried 37.2 million passengers in 2025, with a forecast of around 42 million in 2029. The order book covers 60 ships through to 2037, representing 193,000 additional berths and 71 billion dollars of investment.

For an owner or a yard, that pipeline means two distinct types of project: equipment written into a newbuild specification, and equipment fitted during a scheduled dry-docking. Both follow the yard’s timetable rather than the supplier’s, which is why masses, footprints and material documents have to be available at the design stage.

Three zones, three sets of requirements

Zone of the ship User Dominant requirement Suitable equipment
Open passenger deck Passengers, unsupervised Corrosion, safety, zero maintenance 316L stainless structures, bodyweight, fixed loads
Indoor passenger gym Passengers, often supervised Fire behaviour, acoustics, density of use Guided load, cable stations, free weights
Crew space Seafarers, daily use Habitability, robustness, small footprint Wall rig, bench, dumbbells, pull-up bar

Open deck: the material argument

A cruise ship deck exposed to spray sits in the most severe corrosivity categories of ISO 9223. The standard classifies atmospheres from C1 to CX; permanent marine exposure lies between C5 and CX.

ISO 9223 category Zinc loss, first year Carbon steel loss, first year
C5, very high 4.2 to 8.4 microns per year 80 to 200 microns per year
CX, extreme 8.4 to 25 microns per year 200 to 700 microns per year

Standard galvanising is therefore consumed within a few years in these conditions. Stainless 316L is not consumed: its passive layer re-forms in the presence of oxygen. Its superiority over 304 rests on molybdenum, present at 2.0 to 2.5 % under EN 10088 and absent from 304. In the formula PREN = Cr + 3.3 Mo + 16 N, that puts the 316L index between 23.1 and 28.5, against 17.5 to 20.8 for 304. The full selection method is set out on the page comparing grades 304, 316L and superaustenitic.

A note of vocabulary for specifications: the category C5-M disappeared with the 2017 edition of ISO 12944-2, replaced by C5 for severe land-based exposure and CX for offshore and permanent spray.

Fire behaviour in interior spaces

SOLAS regulation II-2/3 defines a non-combustible material as one which neither burns nor gives off flammable vapours in sufficient quantity for self-ignition at around 750 degrees Celsius. Annex 2 of the 2010 FTP Code states that products made solely of common metals and alloys are considered non-combustible and may be installed without test or approval.

For an indoor cruise ship gym, that leads to three distinct regimes:

  • Stainless frames, uprights and bars: non-combustible without test.
  • Seats, backrests and pads: covered by part 8 of the FTP Code on upholstered furniture, with no exemption provided.
  • Paints, powder coatings and varnishes: covered by SOLAS regulation II-2/6 on smoke production and toxicity.

The list of equipment subject to the wheelmark of directive 2014/90/EU is set by implementing regulation (EU) 2025/1533, in force since 23 September 2025. No item of sports equipment forms a family of its own there: the elements concerned are covered as upholstered furniture or as surface finishes, not as the machine itself.

Intensive unsupervised use: the design choices

A cruise ship fitness area is used without supervision, by passengers of every level, on back-to-back voyages. Three trade-offs follow.

  • No electronics in exposed areas: a console that fails mid-voyage stays out of service until the next technical call. The IGREEN non-motorised outdoor treadmill, at 5,999 euros excluding VAT, has no motor, no power board and no electrical connection. See the range of outdoor treadmills.
  • Fixed loads or bodyweight: stainless outdoor dumbbells and bumper plates get moved and lost; machines with integrated loads and bodyweight structures do not raise that problem on an open deck.
  • Simple, legible adjustments: without supervision, a complex machine is a machine used badly. Multi-function stations and guided-movement positions limit the risk.

Frequently asked questions

Is the equipment compatible with a shipyard specification?

The documents usually requested – material grade, dimensions, masses, floor footprints, permissible loads – are supplied with the quotation. Fire qualification follows the regime described above: metal frame non-combustible without test under annex 2 of the 2010 FTP Code, upholstered elements and finishes handled according to the requirements of the ship. The point is settled with the yard’s design office before ordering.

How is a machine fixed to a cruise ship deck?

By base plate on the supporting structure, or by an added technical floor where drilling is ruled out. Sizing depends on the inertia loads adopted by the ship’s classification society, on the mass of the machine and on the nature of the deck. Those are data the yard provides, and they govern the choice of references.

What maintenance does stainless equipment on board require?

Periodic rinsing with fresh water is enough to remove surface chloride deposits. There is no paint to touch up, no anode to replace and no motor to service. The stainless structures in the range carry a lifetime guarantee.

Can both the passenger and crew spaces be equipped?

Yes, with different configurations. The passenger space favours legibility of use and resistance to footfall; the crew space favours compactness and versatility on a reduced area. Crew habitability requirements are settled with the operator at design stage.

Discussing your project

Send us the ship, the zone concerned, the available area and the intervention schedule: the quotation comes back with masses, floor footprints and the technical documents the yard expects.
