Description
The rocking horse is the item every specifier already has a picture of, and there is a reason it has outlasted every fashion in play design: a child who gets on a horse knows immediately what to do with it. This version keeps the familiar shape but rebuilds it in materials that survive a public site — a hot-dip galvanised and powder-coated steel spring, a through-coloured HDPE body and moulded plastic handles — rather than the painted timber that most ageing horses in French and UK play areas were made from.
Why the classic still specifies well
- Instantly readable: no instruction, no supervision prompt, no learning curve for a two-year-old.
- Rhythmic rocking that children set themselves, which builds balance and core control while they think they are riding.
- Single-user item, useful for spreading children across a play area instead of concentrating them at one structure.
- The obvious like-for-like replacement when an old timber rocking horse fails its annual inspection.
Materials and construction
- Steel components protected against corrosion by hot-dip galvanising and powder coating.
- Body in high-strength weather-resistant HDPE panel.
- Handles in injection-moulded plastic.
- Central spring giving a stable, self-limiting motion.
- Ground anchor supplied for fixing.
Siting and safety area
The rider measures 0.9 by 0.27 m and stands 0.84 m high, with a minimum impact area of 4.0 by 3.3 m and a foundation depth of 0.6 m. The free height of fall is below 0.6 m, the threshold above which EN 1176 requires an impact-attenuating surface. Any change of equipment must be recorded in the site file; our notes on playground inspection records and operator duties set out what that involves.

Frequently asked questions
Can it be installed on the foundation of an old rocking horse?
Only after inspection. Existing foundations rarely match the anchor pattern and are often shallower than the 0.6 m required. We normally quote fresh foundations and treat the removal of the old item as part of the works.
Does HDPE really outlast painted timber?
On a public site, yes. Timber requires recoating and eventually splits at the fixings; HDPE is coloured through the panel, is not attacked by water and takes a graffiti wipe without losing its finish.
What is the lead time?
Lead times depend on colourway and on whether foundations and installation are included. We confirm a firm date with the quotation rather than quoting a nominal figure.
Tell us how many riders you are replacing and whether groundworks are in scope, and we will return a costed proposal within 24 business hours.
