Description
A single spring rider is often the entire play provision a small village green, a farm campsite or a rural gite can justify, and in that situation the shape matters more than usual: it is the only character on site. The cockerel works because it belongs where it stands. On a farm-themed pitch, next to a village hall or beside a country pub garden, it reads as part of the place rather than as a piece of municipal kit dropped onto the grass.
The right item for a small site
- Low purchase and installation cost relative to any multi-item structure, which puts a compliant play offer within reach of a parish council or a small operator.
- A free height of fall below 0.6 m, the threshold above which EN 1176 requires impact-attenuating surfacing, so a well-drained grass sward is usually acceptable and the surfacing budget stays close to zero.
- One item, one inspection record, one set of spares: the lightest possible ongoing burden for an operator without a maintenance team.
- A farmyard character that sits naturally in rural and agritourism settings.
Materials and construction
- Steel components protected against corrosion by hot-dip galvanising and powder coating.
- Body in high-strength weather-resistant HDPE panel.
- Handles in injection-moulded plastic.
- Central spring for a stable, controlled rocking motion.
- Ground anchor supplied for fixing.
Siting and safety area
The rider measures 0.9 by 0.27 m and stands 0.84 m high; the minimum impact area is 4.0 by 3.3 m and the foundation is 0.6 m deep. On grass, check drainage before siting: a permanently wet patch will be worn to mud within a season by concentrated use. Further characters are available in our spring riders range.

Frequently asked questions
Does a single item still need a formal inspection regime?
Yes. One item on a village green is a public playground in the eyes of the standard: it needs routine visual checks, functional inspections and an annual main inspection, with records kept.
Can it be installed without a contractor?
The anchor and instructions are supplied, but the installation has to be documented for the post-installation inspection. Most small operators find it cheaper overall to have it installed and certified in one visit.
Is grass acceptable underneath?
At this fall height, generally yes on well-drained ground. Where the item will be used intensively, a bound or synthetic surface avoids the mud ring that forms around a popular rider.
Tell us where the rider is going and what the ground is like, and we will confirm the anchoring method and return a costed proposal within 24 business hours.
