Description
SHAH is a mid-size rope play structure built around several raised platforms connected by climbing nets. On a 5.9 x 4.3 m footprint it is one of the most straightforward replacements for a tired timber climbing frame: the plot is comparable, the excavation is limited to 0.6 m foundations, and the play offer moves from a single fixed route to platform-to-platform circulation.
Platform-to-platform play
The difference between a rope structure and a rigid frame is that the connections move. Children crossing a net between two platforms are managing their own balance rather than walking a fixed deck, and that is where the physical development value sits — proprioception, grip strength, route planning. Several platforms rather than one also means several children can be at height at the same time without one waiting for the other.
- Stainless steel structural posts
- Climbing nets and ropes on several levels
- Interconnected raised play platforms
- Varied climbing and gripping elements
A practical replacement item
For a housing association, a school or a campsite replacing equipment that has failed inspection, the questions are plot size, ground works and residual maintenance. SHAH answers all three: a modest footprint, 0.6 m foundations rather than a metre, and stainless posts that never need repainting. The remaining maintenance item is the rope, which is replaceable run by run.
Materials
Stainless steel posts, 18 mm polyamide rope with a braided galvanised steel core, cut-resistant and UV-stabilised, aluminium and stainless steel connectors, HPL decorative panels, high-strength concrete foundations at 0.6 m depth.
Surfacing
The free height of fall is 2.3 m. The impact area requires an impact-attenuating surface certified to EN 1177 for a critical fall height of at least 2.3 m across the full 9.9 x 7.3 m safety area. The equipment itself is certified to EN 1176 by an independent certification body; the surfacing is governed by EN 1177 and specified separately.

Frequently asked questions
Can SHAH be installed on the footprint of an old timber frame?
Usually, provided the existing foundations can be removed and the 9.9 x 7.3 m safety area is available. Old concrete foundations are the most common obstacle; allow for breaking out in the groundworks budget.
Is existing bark surfacing acceptable?
Only if it is the correct depth for a 2.3 m critical fall height, is properly contained and is topped up. Loose fill compacts and migrates, so a surface installed for a lower fall height will not automatically pass.
How many children can be on it at once?
There is no single figure in the standard; capacity is a function of the number of platforms and access routes. With several platforms linked by nets, small groups use it comfortably without crowding a single access point.
Send us the existing plot dimensions, what is currently installed and your surfacing, and we will return a costed proposal with the siting drawing for SHAH within 24 business hours.
